O-ring Measuring Cones

O-ring Measuring Cones

Measuring an O-ring is often done using a caliper, as it allows you to measure both the inner diameter (ID) and the cross-section (CS). However, measuring the inner diameter of larger O-rings this way can be challenging. This is because most O-rings are elastic and may deform from a round to an oval shape when the caliper is extended beyond the actual inner diameter of the O-ring. This is where O-ring Measuring Cones come in as an excellent solution. With an o ring cone or an oring sizing cone, you can measure O-rings of various sizes accurately and efficiently. Our O-ring Measuring Cones are available individually or in sets, covering sizes ranging from ø5mm to ø300mm. Whether you need a single o ring measuring cone or a set of metric o ring measuring cones, we’ve got you covered. We also provide a step-by-step guide on how to measure O-rings using this method, ensuring you get the most accurate results.

How to measure O-rings using a Measuring Cone?

Measuring an O-ring with a Measuring Cone is very simple and can be done in 6 easy steps.

Step 1: Preparation
Start with a clean and dry O-ring to ensure dirt or grease doesn’t affect the measurement. Inspect the O-ring for any damage, such as cracks or deformations, which could impact the accuracy. Then, select a measuring cone that matches the estimated size of the O-ring for optimal results.

Step 2: Placing the O-ring
Carefully take hold of the O-ring and slide it over the tip of the measuring cone. Ensure the O-ring is not stretched or deformed during placement, as this could affect the reading. Make sure the O-ring sits straight and evenly on the cone to guarantee an accurate measurement.

Step 3: Adjusting the O-ring to the correct diameter
Gently slide the O-ring down the cone until it sits snugly against it. Ensure the O-ring maintains its natural, round shape without tension or distortion. Avoid pushing it too far, as this could result in an incorrect inner diameter reading.

Step 4: Reading the Inner Diameter
Check the scale on the measuring cone and read the inner diameter (ID) of the O-ring where its inner edge meets the scale. Verify that the O-ring is positioned correctly for an accurate reading. Record the inner diameter for future reference.

Step 5: Checking the Cross-Section (Optional)
To measure the cross-section (CS) of the O-ring, use a caliper. Gently close the caliper jaws until the O-ring is held securely without being compressed. Check the consistency of the value by measuring at different points around the O-ring, and note the average cross-section.

Step 6: Documenting the measurements
Record the measured values of both the inner diameter and the cross-section in a logbook or digital system. Include additional details such as the O-ring’s material or application, if necessary. Keeping this information organized makes it easier to identify the correct O-ring for future use.
