X-Rings

X-rings, also known as Quad-rings, are sealing rings with an X-shaped cross-section that provide improved sealing performance compared to O-rings. With four sealing lips, they offer better resistance to pressure variations and leaks. Made from materials such as NBR, FKM, and EPDM, they are suitable for various applications in hydraulics, pneumatics, automotive, and mechanical engineering. X-rings retain their elasticity over a wide temperature range and are ideal for dynamic seals where movement and friction occur. More information about X-rings can be found here.

What is an X-ring?

An X-ring, also known as a Quad-ring, is a sealing ring with a special X-shaped cross-section that provides enhanced sealing properties compared to a standard O-ring. These rings have four lips instead of the two lips of traditional O-rings, which results in better sealing and resistance to pressure variations. X-rings are used in various industries, including hydraulics, pneumatics, automotive, and mechanical engineering, for sealing shafts, cylinders, pumps, and valves.

The unique geometry of X-rings ensures even pressure distribution and minimizes leakage, even at high pressures and temperatures. X-rings are available in different materials, such as NBR, FKM, and EPDM, to meet specific application requirements and chemical compatibility. For high-quality sealing solutions under variable pressure conditions, X-rings are an excellent choice.

Applications of X-rings

X-rings are widely used seals in dynamic applications, meaning they are used in systems where movement and deformation occur. These rings are often applied in hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, where they serve to seal fluids or gases and prevent them from escaping, even with moving parts.

In automotive applications, X-rings are used in engine blocks, gearboxes, and shock absorbers to prevent leaks and ensure the proper functioning of these systems. In the industrial sector, X-rings play a crucial role in pumps, valves, and hydraulic systems, where they help seal moving parts under high pressure.

Thanks to their flexibility and durability, X-rings are ideal for situations involving movement and friction, making them reliable in various dynamic environments.

Why an X-ring?

Seals play a crucial role in preventing leakage by keeping fluids or gases from entering or leaving an application. This makes proper sealing very important, and the demands on seals are becoming increasingly critical. A commonly used seal is the O-ring.

However, there are circumstances where an O-ring is not sufficient. In these cases, a more effective sealing element is required: the X-ring. Discover here when and why an X-ring is the most suitable choice for your application.

Why should you use an X-ring? In moving parts, an O-ring can shift in its groove, which can lead to torsion and surface damage, potentially resulting in leakage. To prevent this, an X-ring is often used because of its four sealing lips that resemble an "X," hence the name X-ring or quad ring.

Advantages of an X-ring include less compression needed than with O-rings, reducing friction and wear in dynamic seals. The sealing lips provide greater sealing capacity and also form a lubrication groove, which is beneficial in dynamic seals. The main advantage of an X-ring, however, is the high stability in dynamic applications, especially in sliding seals.
