Dow Chemicals and Corning Glass Company collaborated to create Dow Corning, which was a major advance in silicone rubber manufacture. General Electric patents their production technology in 1947, following suit. VMQ O-rings are an elastomeric group made up of silicones, oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon. The tensile strength, rip resistance, and abrasion resistance of silicones are usually low. Notwithstanding these drawbacks, specialty compounds with remarkable resistance to heat and pressure have surfaced. While there are silicone compounds with increased strength, they nonetheless have a lower tensile strength than regular rubber. The constant advancement and specialization in silicone rubber technology is a testament to the dedication to satisfying a wide range of industrial demands.
