An O-ring coating or surface treatment can change how an elastomer component behaves during assembly and use. Depending on the selected treatment, it can reduce friction, facilitate manual or automatic assembly, improve abrasion resistance or provide a surface suitable for regulated applications. O-ring-Stocks.eu offers a broad range of coating and surface treatment options for different elastomer compounds and operating conditions. These include PTFE-based coatings, silicone-based lubricating treatments, PFAS-free alternatives and surface-modification technologies that do not create a conventional deposited coating layer.

It operates within a temperature range of -50°C to +225°C and is compatible with all elastomer compounds.
Untreated elastomer surfaces can create friction during installation, particularly when O-rings are fitted automatically or installed into narrow grooves. A suitable lubricating coating can make the surface easier to handle and reduce resistance during assembly.
Depending on the selected coating, an O-ring surface treatment may provide:
Not every coating provides all these properties. The individual coating pages explain the characteristics, material compatibility, temperature range and available options for each treatment.
Several treatments within our range use PTFE to reduce friction and facilitate the assembly of elastomer components. Depending on the formulation, these coatings are available as one-component, two-component or three-component systems. They may be water-based, solvent-based or thermosetting and generally provide a dry surface finish. The available PTFE-based options include treatments for simple assembly processes as well as coatings developed for applications requiring improved abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, colour identification or defined regulatory compliance. PTFE-based options within the range include COLORCOAT, DECOCOAT, EASYCOAT, GLECOAT, LUBRYCOAT, METACOAT and PGMCOAT.
For applications where fluorine-free or PFAS-free solutions are required, several alternative treatments are available. FLOWCOAT, GAZCOAT, LUBRYFREE-COAT, POLYSILCOAT, REVOL-SIL and SILOCOAT are identified as PFAS-free solutions. Their properties differ considerably. Some provide a completely dry surface, while others leave a lubricated finish. Certain options are developed for all elastomer compounds, while REVOL-SIL is specifically designed for LSR and VMQ silicone elastomers. PFAS-free does not describe one specific type of coating. It is therefore important to compare the complete treatment specification, including material compatibility, finish, temperature range and intended application.
O-ring coatings are available with either a dry or lubricated finish.
A dry coating forms a treated surface without the wet or oily feel associated with a conventional lubricant. Treatments with a dry finish include COLORCOAT, DECOCOAT, EASYCOAT, GAZCOAT, GLECOAT, LUBRYFREE-COAT, LUBRYCOAT, METACOAT and PGMCOAT.
A lubricated or wet finish may be suitable for applications where persistent surface lubrication, low friction or improved dynamic performance is required. FLOWCOAT, POLYSILCOAT, SILOCOAT and SMARTCOAT provide a lubricated finish. The correct finish depends on the assembly method and the conditions in which the O-ring will operate.
Automatic assembly places different demands on an O-ring surface than manual installation. The O-ring must move reliably through feeding and installation equipment without excessive friction or uncontrolled sticking. Several treatments within the range are specifically identified as suitable for automatic assembly, including FLOWCOAT, GAZCOAT, METACOAT, POLYSILCOAT, REVOL-SIL, SILOCOAT and SMARTCOAT. Some of these treatments also provide additional properties such as abrasion resistance, dynamic performance, a PFAS-free composition or compatibility with all elastomer compounds.
In applications where the O-ring surface is subjected to repeated movement or contact, assembly performance alone may not be sufficient. A treatment with improved abrasion resistance may be required. GAZCOAT and REVOL-SIL provide excellent abrasion resistance through permanent surface modification rather than a conventional deposited coating layer. FLOWCOAT, GLECOAT, POLYSILCOAT and SMARTCOAT also provide improved wear or abrasion resistance. The required level of resistance depends on the movement, contact conditions and elastomer compound used in the application.
Certain O-ring surface treatments are developed for applications requiring defined regulatory compliance. EASYCOAT complies with FDA and KTW-BWGL requirements and is suitable for food-contact, drinking-water and pharmaceutical applications. LUBRYFREE-COAT is a PFAS-free impregnating lubricant that also complies with FDA and KTW-BWGL requirements. GAZCOAT is suitable for food contact, drinking water, medical and pharmaceutical applications. It complies with the Italian Ministerial Decree of 21 March 1973 for food-contact materials. REVOL-SIL is designed specifically for silicone elastomers and is suitable for food-contact, drinking-water, medical and pharmaceutical applications. It complies with FDA, KTW-BWGL, ISO 10993-5:2009 and ISO 10993-12:2021. Regulatory requirements must always be considered together with the elastomer compound and the complete application conditions.
The appearance of an O-ring coating may also be important for product identification or process control. Many treatments are available with a transparent finish, allowing the original O-ring colour to remain visible. COLORCOAT and GLECOAT can be supplied in custom RAL colours. SILOCOAT can also be supplied in custom colours. FLOWCOAT, GLECOAT, METACOAT, PGMCOAT and POLYSILCOAT can be supplied with a UV tracer. A UV tracer can support identification of the treated surface during inspection or production.
The operating temperature differs considerably between the available surface treatments. Some coatings are intended for moderate temperature ranges, while others are suitable for considerably higher or lower temperatures. For example, LUBRYFREE-COAT operates between -40°C and +100°C, while GAZCOAT withstands temperatures up to +450°C. GLECOAT, POLYSILCOAT and SILOCOAT operate at temperatures up to +250°C. FLOWCOAT, POLYSILCOAT and SILOCOAT can be used from temperatures as low as -70°C. The stated temperature range applies to the surface treatment. The temperature limits of the underlying O-ring material must also be considered.
Coating compatibility varies by elastomer compound. Several treatments are compatible with all elastomer compounds. These include FLOWCOAT, GAZCOAT, POLYSILCOAT, SILOCOAT and SMARTCOAT. Other coatings are compatible with all compounds except silicone. This applies to DECOCOAT, EASYCOAT, GLECOAT, LUBRYFREE-COAT, LUBRYCOAT, METACOAT and PGMCOAT. COLORCOAT is compatible with FKM, HNBR, NBR and EPDM. REVOL-SIL is specifically designed for LSR and VMQ silicone elastomers. Material compatibility should therefore be checked before selecting a treatment.
Selecting the right O-ring coating starts with the application requirements. Important points to consider include:
